DESCRIPTION

TYKEs (Theatre Young Kids Enjoy) culminates its 20th anniversary season with Rapunzel, a hilarious modern adaptation of the tale about a long-haired princess and her climbing suitor, written by the Emmy-winning creators of Friends and Veronica’s Closet. A witty, tongue-in-cheek retelling of the famous fairytale, Rapunzel is the very first show TYKEs ever created, and the only title ever to be repeated in TYKEs’ 20-year history.

Ideal for kids ages four and up, performances take place at the JCC Hart Theater, 1200 Edgewood Avenue in Brighton on:
Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Sunday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Sunday, April 6 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The 2 p.m. show on Saturday, April 5 is ASL interpreted.

Tickets cost $22 ($20 for JCC members) and are available at tykestheatre.org.

Living alone in a tower with nothing but her hair and her literal witch of a "mother," Rapunzel's sixteenth birthday finally arrives, meaning that she'll be able to see the outside world for the first time. Scared to part with Rapunzel, the witch reneges on her promise of freedom. Lucky for Rapunzel, young Prince Brian stumbles upon her tower and famously beckons, “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair!” Before the Prince and Rapunzel inevitably live happily ever after, they face the ire of the witch, along with a bevy of other hilarious obstacles.

Based on the Grimm’s fairytale, TYKEs’ Rapunzel is a musical from the minds of revered sitcom creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Kauffman’s husband Michael Skloff, the composer of the Friends theme song, wrote the music. The creators have taken a few comical liberties with the story, including focusing more on the parent-child relationship, and temporarily cursing the Prince with permanent sunglasses.

TYKEs’ founder Freyda Schneider explains, “Having performed for exuberant audiences for two decades now, we’ve had the privilege of bringing to life some incredible scripts. There’s not a single script I love more than this version of Rapunzel because the comedy is equally appropriate and hilarious for kids and for the grownups accompanying them! More than any other TYKEs show, Rapunzel really is perfect for audience members of literally every age!”

Rapunzel is sponsored by Wegmans.
