Albany Consort begins its 50 year celebration

475 Homer Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94301, USA

DESCRIPTION

The Albany Consort, a fixture of Bay Area music making, begins a year of celebration. Formed by Jonathan Salzedo in 1974, this year marks 50 years of operation.

This concert features a harpsichord concerto written by founder Jonathan Salzedo's uncle Leonard Salzedo in 1968. The score of this brilliant concerto came to light recently, and Jonathan has been working with Leonard's surviving daughter Caroline to create a new edition for performance and publication. It's a delightful 60's piece - virtuosic, exciting, dreamy, and funny.

Also on this program the group explores more familiar territory - Bach's sumptuous double violin concerto, and Geminiani's Concerto La Folia, derived from Corelli's original violin solo version. One more work bridges the gap - Gounod's Funeral March for a Marionette, better known as the Alfred Hitchcock theme.

The group draws its membership from top Bay Area freelancers. For this program, the lineup is:

Jonathan Salzedo harpsichord/director

David Milnes conductor

Marion Rubinstein recorder

Laura Jeannin, Rachel Hurwitz, Joe Edelberg, Erika Miranda violins

Daria D'Andrea, Ondine Young violas

Amy Brodo, Hasan Abualhaj cellos

Ken Miller double bass

Albany Consort productions are always informal, with audience very close to the performers. Notable are Jonathan's brief informative introductions to the music, taking it out of the normal formal setting into a salon atmosphere.

$35 general, $25 Woman's Club members, $95 family.
