Oxford University Chamber Choir, Schola Cantorum of Oxford, is joined by former members of the choir and Oxford's own world-class period instrument ensemble, Instruments of Time and Truth, to celebrate its 65th Anniversary with a concert of works by J.S. Bach. The programme includes Bach's sparkling setting of the Magnificat in D major (BWV 243) and the rarely performed secular cantata, Tonet, ihr Pauken! (BW 214), which was composed in 1733 for the birthday of Maria Josepha, Queen of Poland and Electress of Saxony. Bach reused much of the music for this cantata when he wrote his Christmas Oratorio in 1734, including the gorgeously celebratory opening chorus.
