Maze is a new work exploring the history of racism in medical practice and present-day inequities women of color face when attempting to receive humane treatment, let alone equitable healthcare. The performance is based on the ancient Greek myth of Theseus, Ariadne and the labyrinth. It was Ariadne with a ball of string who helped guide Theseus and other sacrificial victims to escape their fate as offerings to a monstrous Minotaur. Through stories, dance, music and ritual, the Medea Project will explore the challenges women of color face from the unequal health policies and practices in the wealthiest industrialized nation in the world.
The Medea Project: Theater For Incarcerated Women / HIV Circle has a long history of developing powerful, original productions demonstrating their vision of "ARTS AS SOCIAL ACTIVISM". Since its inception in 1989, founding Artistic Director, Rhodessa and the company have created performance pieces based on the lives of incarcerated women and women living with HIV. Jones' work has been recognized nationally and internationally as ground-breaking and revolutionary in its centering of women and their families impacted by justice and health care inequalities.
