6:15 a.m. marathon start. All participants must be able to complete the marathon in 6 hours (13:44- minute-per-mile pace) or faster. This is a Boston qualifying event.
7:45 a.m. half marathon start. All half marathon participants must be able to complete the course in 4.25 hours (19:27-minute-per-mile pace) or faster.
Half Marathon Wave Start
We offer a wave start for the half marathon. During the registration process you will be asked to provide your estimated finishing time. This will help us determine which wave to assign you to.
Carlsbad Marathon Surf Sun Run 5K
6:45 a.m. 5K start. Carlsbad Marathon Surf Sun Run 5K features an out and back course that passes by the beautiful Buena Vista Lagoon and starts and finishes at The Shoppes at Carlsbad, the same location as the Carlsbad full and half marathon.
First race of the SoCal 3x5, a trio of 5K's including the Carlsbad Surf Sun Run in January, the La Jolla Shores 5K in April and the America's Finest City 5K in August.

This spectacular coastal marathon and half marathon offers participants breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Both courses start at the intersection of Marron and Monroe (adjacent to the southwest side of The Shoppes at Carlsbad). From there, the course heads west toward the coast and then south on the historic Highway 101/Carlsbad Boulevard. Both full and half marathoners will experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean for the majority of their 13.1-mile journey, traveling out and back along the historic Highway 101/Carlsbad Boulevard. Full marathoners will head south on Carlsbad Boulevard for their first coastal loop. They will turnaround at La Costa and head north back to Mountain View Drive at the northern end of the village of Carlsbad where they will turnaround and head south for their second coastal loop. They will turnaround at Breakwater Road and head north on Carlsbad Boulevard back to the finish.
