Marathon

6:15 a.m. marathon start. All participants must be able to complete the marathon in 6 hours (13:44- minute-per-mile pace) or faster. This is a Boston qualifying event.

Half Marathon

7:45 a.m. half marathon start. All half marathon participants must be able to complete the course in 4 hours (18:19-minute-per-mile pace) or faster.

Half Marathon Wave Start

We offer a wave start for the half marathon. During the registration process you will be asked to provide your estimated finishing time. This will help us determine which wave to assign you to.

Surf Sun Run 5K

6:45 a.m. 5K start. Surf Sun Run 5K features an out and back course that passes by the beautiful Buena Vista Lagoon and starts and finishes at The Shoppes at Carlsbad, the same location as the Carlsbad full and half marathon.

First race of the SoCal 3x5, a trio of 5K's including the Carlsbad Surf Sun Run in January, the La Jolla Shores 5K in April and the America's Finest City 5K in August.

Carlsbad Double Down Challenge

Are you up for an extra challenge this year at Carlsbad? Double down on race day and kick off your morning at 6:45 a.m. with the Surf Sun Run 5K then finish it off with the 7:45 a.m. Carlsbad Half Marathon. To be a part of this inaugural 16.2 challenge, just choose the Double Down Challenge during registration and on race day earn triple bling – your 5K, half marathon and Carlsbad Double Down Challenge medal! If you’ve already registered for either the 5K or the half marathon and want to take the challenge, please give us a call to upgrade.

Virtual Run

Can’t be with us on race day?That’s okay! We have a NEW virtual race option that allows you to earn all our amazing swag but on your own time!

Register for the virtual race of your choice (Surf Sun Run 5K, Double Down Challenge, Half Marathon or Full Marathon) and your swag will include:

•Technical fabric long-sleeve shirt in men’s or women’s cut

•Stylish ¼ zip pullover jacket in men’s or women’s cut (not included with Surf Sun Run 5K entry)

•Gorgeous finisher’s medal

•Souvenir bib

You can pick up your swag at the expo or two weeks after the race, we’ll send it to you at the mailing address used during registration.

Do you want your virtual race to count towards one of our series challenges? No problem! Post-race day, you’ll receive an email allowing you to upload a link or photo of your race from your fitness tracker (i.e. Strava, Runkeeper, etc.) by March 31, 2019.

Has your race day situation changed? We can accommodate switching into or out of the virtual category through Sunday, January 6, 2019 only. Email us on or before January 6, 2019 to make the switch.

The fine print: Virtual participants are not eligible for age group or overall awards.

Coastal Comfort Package

Go ahead, treat yourself and enhance your race experience by choosing the Coastal Comfort Package. Additional Information

This spectacular coastal marathon and half marathon offers participants breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Both courses start at the intersection of Marron and Monroe (adjacent to the southwest side of The Shoppes at Carlsbad). From there, the course heads west toward the coast and then south on the historic Highway 101/Carlsbad Boulevard. Both full and half marathoners will experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean for the majority of their 13.1-mile journey, traveling out and back along the historic Highway 101/Carlsbad Boulevard. Full marathoners will head south on Carlsbad Boulevard for their first coastal loop. They will turnaround at La Costa and head north back to Mountain View Drive at the northern end of the village of Carlsbad where they will turn around and head south for their second coastal loop. They will turn around at Breakwater Road and head north on Carlsbad Boulevard back to the finish.
