CHKD School Healthcare Conference

Location: Waitzer Hall, EVMS

Target Audience: All school personnel, to include nurses, teachers, clinicians, and community agency professionals serving youth.

Exhibitors are also welcome to register through this platform.

Conference Objectives: Offering a forum for healthcare agencies, school nurses, and school personnel to meet and share information on current health issues in the schools. Participants will learn how to build resilience to better work with students and staff, learn about common street drugs and effects, understand traumatic brain injury and what is needed to build support systems in the school, know how to administer a new nasal spray to treat seizures, navigate different programs for homebound students, understand the dangers of vaping and marijuana use, learn about the latest autism resources and new treatments, hear about the trends in the pediatric overweight and obesity populations, and how to support students with narcolepsy.

Continuing Education: 5.0 contact hours/re-certification points will be allotted for educational personnel, social workers, and nurses. Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is an approved provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Virginia Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval Committee, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Contact hours will be awarded upon completion and submission of the electronic conference evaluation form.  Presenters of today’s program have disclosed no relevant financial relationships with agencies or individuals that impact or influence this educational activity. 

Conference fees are non-refundable. Each participant will receive a boxed lunch, conference snacks, and bottled water.

Learn about symptoms that are not explained by other conditions, such as POTS, Pandys, AAG and MSA and how it impacts student’s health and success in school. Presenters: Katrina Lesher, MD, CHKD

The Mental Health Toolkit for Schools 

Learn how to support children and families with practical evidence based strategies and tools. Presenter: Leah Rowland, MD and Jackie Cotton, MD, CHKD

Asthma/Allergies 

Learn how to diminish asthma and allergies triggers in the classroom, understand the dangers of using oils and air fresheners and the latest medication updates. Presenter: Angela Hogan, MD, CHKD 

Supporting the Child with Diabetes

Learn how to work with families when medication compliance and education becomes challenging. Resources and strategies will be discussed to help students understand the importance of medication compliance.  Case studies of what medical neglect looks like and guidelines for when it would be appropriate to call CPS for non-compliance will be discussed. Presenter: Patrick Alwine, LCSW, CHKD

Supporting the Student with Frequent Migraines 

Learn the signs and symptoms of migraines, protocols for medication dispensing and returning to the classroom, trends in diagnosis and appropriate accommodations for the classroom setting. Presenter: Ryan P. Williams, MD, CHKD

Addressing Acute Adolescent Reproductive Health Needs in the School Clinic 

Dr. Caves will provide an overview of menstrual disorders and how to provide support in the school clinic. Dr. Fox will describe causes of acute scrotal pain and swelling in male children. Learn to diagnose and triage testicular torsion. Discuss factors that influence successful surgical treatment of testicular torsion (orchiopexy versus orchiectomy). Presenters: Kyzwana Caves, MD, MPH, FAAP and Janelle Fox, MD, CHKD

Understanding the Student with Sickle Cell 

This session will provide an overview of current symptoms, treatments, and how school nurses can help. Presenters: Nikkie Solorzano, RN and Netta Haynes, RN
