CSJ-AMCD-ALGBTIC Student Representative are proud to announce this educational online webinar on applying to counseling graduate programs.

Dr. Shon D. Smith, Ed.D., ACS, CRC will be our guest from the University of Florida Counselor Education Program. Dr. Shon Smith has 17 years of experience as a Counselor Educator and currently sits on the faculty of the Counselor Education Program at the University of Florida. His primary research interests are in the areas of multicultural and social justice counseling, clinical supervision, counselor education programming/evaluation, leadership and advocacy within the counseling paradigm. Additionally, he works with and conducts research with interpersonal violence perpetrators and victims, the dual populations (mental health and substance abuse) with veterans and military families on adjustment and re-adjustment issues and has been a Professional Counselor for over 23 years. https://education.ufl.edu/counselor-education/

Mary Huffstead, M.Ed., NCC is a graduate student at Georgia State University completing her doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Practice. She received her Master’s degree from Auburn University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Her research interest encompasses multicultural training, bi/multiracial identity, and first generation graduate students. Mary continually strives to advocate and develop awareness of social justice for marginalized groups under her leadership as the Graduate Student Representative for the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development. http://www.multiculturalcounseling.org/

Christian D. Chan, MA, NCC is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in Counseling with the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University (GWU). He also received his MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with The George Washington University. He is currently serving as an adjunct faculty in Counseling at The George Washington University. His interests revolve around intersectionality of cultural and social identity; multiculturalism in counseling, supervision, and counselor education; social justice; career development; critical research methods; acculturative stress; intergenerational conflict; and cultural factors in identity development and socialization. His prior professional experiences include working as a case manager with foster care adolescents, higher education administration, intensive outpatient counselor, and an outpatient counselor, providing individual, couples, parent-child, group, and family counseling services. Due to his passion for mentorship, collaboration, professional identity development, and advocacy, his career vision continues to persist with contributions as a counselor educator, leader in the counseling profession, scholar, and mentor to future counseling professionals. Mr. Chan holds the following positions as student Trustee, Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling (ALGBTIC); Member-at-Large, Outreach and Advocacy, Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA); President, Maryland Counseling Association (MCA); and Graduate Student Co-Chair, Virginia Counselors Association (VCA).

Desa Karye Daniel, M,A. is a second year doctoral student in Counselor Education and Supervision. Ms. Daniel serves as Counselors for Social Justice Graduate Student Representative and well as Student Representative for several other national organizations. She has been involved with Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development for many years as well. Ms. Daniel research interests are African American/Black women and their college experiences with microaggressions, invisibility, discrimination, and racism. Ms. Daniel’s clinical interests are ethnic minority college students with special attention to advocacy within student led groups. Furthermore she has been focused on bring attention and awareness to campaigns such as #BlackLivesMatter that help address societies concerns of police brutality and create equality for all groups. https://counseling-csj.org/

The program will start at 5:00 pm EST and the first portion will be dedicated to Dr. Smith where he will offer general information about graduate schools and then will briefly answer questions.
