Nationally, about 20,000 youth, aged 16 or older, make the transition from foster care to legal emancipation each year. Over 4,000 youth “age out” of California’s foster care system each year. The terms aged out” or “emancipated” describe foster youth who are discharged from the foster care system when they attain a certain age. According to the Children’s Advocacy Institute, 65% of foster youth “age out” of the system without a place to live, less than 3% go to college, 51% are unemployed, and aged out females are 4 times more likely to receive public assistance than the general population.

This is a wonderful opportunity to help support emancipated foster youth. Proceeds from the race benefit Journey House, whose sole purpose is to assist emancipated foster youth to meet their independent living needs. Course Description:

Route covers the City of Los Angeles third largest park. Exit from 110 Freeway on either Avenue 43 or Avenue 52. Griffin Avenue can easily be accessed from these town points.

5K Run/Walk- Starts at entrance to Debs Park on Griffin Avenue. Runners cover rolling hills, including gradual 1 mile climb on trail. Remainder of course covers wide closed road and has 360 degree views of the foothills. Fast last mile finish toward the Audubon Nature Center parking lot.

10K Run/Walk- Starts at entrance to Debs Park on Griffin Avenue. Runners cover rolling hills, including gradual 1 mile climb on trail. Challenging “Billy Goat” climb between miles 2 and 3. Flat trails from mile 4 towards mile 5. Finish toward the Audubon Nature Center parking lot.
