Join an exciting conversation with indigenous leaders from around the globe to discuss how we can embed indigenous traditional wisdom into the design of cities, communities, products, social structures and even arts & culture.

Produced by San Diego Sister Cities Association, in partnership with Vanguard Culture, UCSD, and the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, this forum will delve into the pivotal role of intercity partnerships in fostering global peace and mutual understanding. The forum will highlight the global application of indigenous design principles to tackle modern challenges and advocate for sustainability. By embedding indigenous traditional knowledge into the design of cities, communities, products, social structures and even arts & culture, we can inspire communities to use innovative environmental solutions rooted in ancient indigenous wisdom into their everyday lives.

This forum will unite global indigenous leaders through San Diego's Sister Cities partners, hosted by the Kumeyaay in San Diego and Tijuana, including indigenous leaders from Kenya, Japan, Panama, Australia, Brazil, and others for an engaging discussion about how we can implement indigenous design practices to shape the future of our region.

The Indigenous Design Forum will showcase indigenous art, fashion, handicrafts, and architecture through our indigenous partners and emphasize San Diego-Tijuana as a trinational region, situated on Kumeyaay territory. This initiative aims to celebrate the rich heritage of the Kumeyaay people while shedding light on the cultural significance of the San Diego-Tijuana area. This virtual forum strategically coincides with the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, offering a side panel at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. This alignment amplifies the visibility of the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and showcases our region's cultural richness on a global stage.
