The Allen Bolaffi Fund Lunch with Dr Beverly Goodman-Tchernov, Head of the Dr Moses Strauss Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Haifa and Dr Chelsea Wiseman, Postdoctoral Research Associate in Maritime Archaeology at Flinders University.

Allen was the president of the AICC for over 20 years and was a very strong support of innovation collaboration and the unique relationship between our 2 countries.

Dr. Beverly Goodman-Tchernov
Dr Beverly Goodman-Tchernov is Head of the Dr Moses Strauss Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Haifa in Israel as well as a National Geographic Explorer. As a marine geo-archaeologist, she blends archaeology, geology, and anthropology to explore the complex ways nature and humans impact coastlines. Beverly’s interests include ancient harbours, disasters, and coastal change, and her work has contributed to tsunami disaster planning and education in Israel and the eastern Mediterranean. Beverly has collaborated on projects and co-published with Flinders University colleagues since 2014.

Dr Chelsea Wiseman
Dr Chelsea Wiseman is the Bolaffi Postdoctoral Research Associate in Maritime Archaeology at Flinders University. Originally from the Riverland region of South Australia, Chelsea undertook a Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University in Adelaide. Her Honours research in Eastern Mediterranean prehistory ignited a passion for discovering underwater cultural heritage. Through Flinders’ joint PhD program in maritime archaeology with the University of Haifa in Israel, Chelsea spent a year in Haifa developing methodologies for locating submerged archaeological sites. Her discoveries formed part of the Deep History of Sea Country project, funded by the Australia Research Council, which located the first two submerged Indigenous archaeological sites in Australia.

Flinders University and University of Haifa
Flinders University and the University of Haifa have a strong relationship, particularly in maritime archaeology, where they are both world-leading research and educational institutions. Flinders and Haifa are both full members of the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology, which advances international collaboration for the protection of and research into underwater cultural heritage. Since 2014, the two institutions have worked together to advance discovery and learning in the fields of Archaeology, Maritime Civilizations and Marine Science.

The Project
The Allen Bolaffi Future Fund will enable Flinders and the University of Haifa to expand their partnership through a project designed to increase collaboration between Australia and Israel called: Technical innovation in sea-level studies and archaeology: marine geotechnical and 3D visual applications for submerged landscapes on the Carmel Coast of Israel. As the Bolaffi Postdoctoral Research Associate, Dr Chelsea Wiseman will work under her academic mentors at Flinders and Haifa to expand her research on submerged prehistoric settlements in Israel.
