A panel discussion with Rhana Devenport ONZM, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Douglas Gautier AM, Chief Executive Officer & Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival Centre and Brian Oldman, Director of the South Australian Museum.

Rhana Devenport ONZM is Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia and the first woman to hold this position. She is a museum director, curator, editor, and cultural producer whose career spans art museums, biennials, and arts festivals. As former Director of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki she, in 2017, curated the work of Lisa Reihana for the New Zealand Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Prior to that, she was Director of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth leading to the development of the Len Lye Centre. In Australia, she worked on the first four Asia Pacific Triennials at the Queensland Art Gallery. Her curatorial interests include contemporary art of Asia and the Pacific, time-based media, and social practice.

Since joining the Adelaide Festival Centre as Director in 2006, Douglas Gautier AM has delivered a program-led strategy to grow audiences and position Adelaide Festival Centre as a hub for Asian-Australian cultural engagement. His program innovations include Adelaide Guitar Festival and OzAsia Festival, Australia’s premier international contemporary arts festival focusing on Asia. Under his tenure, the Centre has recently completed a redevelopment, the most significant infrastructure project since it opened in 1973. Douglas came to the Centre after leading one of the world’s great arts festivals as Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As a resident of Asia for 25 years and with international experience in media, tourism, and the arts, he remains closely connected and active in fostering Asian-Australian cultural engagement. He has held a number of positions, including the posts of:

  • Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board
  • Director of Corporate Affairs and Marketing for STAR TV
  • Founding Vice-Chairman of the Asian Arts Festival Association
  • Board member of the Asian Cultural Council
  • Chair of the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres
  • Member of the Australia-Singapore Arts Group
  • Board member of the Global Cultural Districts Network
  • Advisory board member to the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations
  • Flinders University Councillor

In 2016, Douglas was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the arts and the community.

Brian Oldman commenced as Director of the South Australian Museum in January 2014. Prior to this appointment, Brian has held senior executive positions in some of London’s most respected cultural and scientific institutions having worked in transformative roles at the British Museum where he was Managing Director of the British Museum Company, the National Maritime Museum, the Zoological Society of London and Sir John Soane’s Museum. He has developed extensive leadership experience working for industry leaders, Nestle, Quaker Oats and Kimberly Clark before following his passion by entering the cultural sector. He led successful dynamic programmes designed to increase visitor numbers, linked institutional research to community programmes, built collaboration within institutions and developed commercial income streams.
