Kicks For Class Sports Gala 2024

Corpus Christi, TX

Kicks For Class Sports Gala 2024

DESCRIPTION

BENIFITING THE STUDENTS OF COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS

Hundreds of middle school students have never had the opportunity to participate in team sports simply because they cannot afford the required shoes. Kicks For Class was designed to connect generations and resources so that we can change our future, together. Kicks for Class, a program in it’s third year with Communities In Schools of the Coastal Bend, was created in cooperation with The Heil Law Firm.

Participation in team sports has been shown to lead to an increase in school attendance, higher GPAs, involvement with mentors, and exposure to positive peer pressure. Participation in team sports has also been linked to a decrease in dropout rates and involvement in gangs, especially among middle schoolers.

This Sports Gala is fundraising in preparation for the fall student shopping event, in which deserving students will be paired up with mentors for a special shopping session for their new sports kicks and equipment!

Join us Thursday, Aug 8th at 6:30 pm at the Solomon Ortiz Center in downtown Corpus Christi to support our Coastal Bend students.

Hear from pro-athlete Hall of Fame Michael Irvin and Corpus Christi Professional Boxer Julian Delgado. Partake in our live auction with your chance to win amazing prizes including Sports Memorabilia, sporting event tickets and vacation packages.

About The Legendary Michael Irvin

Michael Irvin is an American sports commentator and former professional football player. He played his entire 12-year career as a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL).

Irvin played college football for the Miami Hurricanes and was selected in the first round of the 1988 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent his entire 12-year NFL career from 1988 to 1999 with the Cowboys before it ended abruptly from a cervical spine injury sustained in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Veterans Stadium on October 10, 1999, in which Irvin was carted off the field and transported to a Philadelphia hospital.

Irvin was nicknamed "Playmaker" due to his penchant for making big plays in big games during his college and pro careers, and he relished the nickname, even acquiring "PLY MKR" as his Texas vanity license plate. Along with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, Irvin was one of three key Cowboys offensive players, known as "The Triplets", who led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins in 1992, 1993, and 1995.

On August 4, 2007, Irvin was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, delivering a tearful acceptance speech in which he referenced both his life as a football player and the many mistakes he has made in his life. His speech has been praised by many NFL commentators as heartfelt, including those who had been inclined to dislike him.

Irvin is widely considered to be one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.

Irvin is a former broadcaster for ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown and currently an analyst for NFL Network.
