Ottawa Premiere the Week of Friday March 12th!
Set in Abidjan’s MACA prison, the aging Black Beard, in attempt to maintain control over his fellow inmates, resorts to a “story” ritual, wherein one prisoner is forced, Scheherazade-style, to tell stories for an entire night. The young pickpocket he chooses relays the haunting tale of the Zama King.

4/4 Stars! “worships the power of storytelling…a nimble cinematic-theatrical hybrid…The way Lacôte uses Roman’s yarn to not only mix ancient folklore with modern mythmaking, but also theatrical song and dance, is a tremendous feat of filmmaking.” (RogerEbert.com)
“It’s quite a wild ride of a fable…Newcomer Bakary Koné, as Roman, thoroughly engages as a kid way out of his depth…The rest of the ensemble shines, as well…All the elements, including the excellent cinematography, along with lyrical singing and dancing, come together in a consistently thrilling mix…a majestic cinematic experience.” (Hammer To Nail)
“visually striking…you feel like you’re experiencing something both totally unique and building upon the culture of the past…Clearly a movie’s doing something right when the biggest complaint you can make about it is that there’s not more of it.” (Comic Book Resources)
