The Oceanside Intl Film Festival Presents - The Opener (A Feel Good Music Doc)

The Oceanside International Film Festival kicks-off it's 15th Season with the San Diego Premiere of Jeff Toye & Sunya Mara's Feel Good Music Documentary, "THE OPENER". The Event takes place at The Star Theare on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025.

"The Opener" focueses on musician Philip Labes and his journey from street performer to opering for his hero, Jason Mraz. The film documents Labes' experience of writing 30 songs in 30 days during the pandemic, which led to him being discovered by Mraz and invited on tour. The documentary also explores the challenges and triumphs of Labes' newfound success, as well as the impact of a hurricane on the tour.

Doors at 4:30 | Red Carpet and Lobby Reception at The Star Theatre

Film Start at 5:30 | Followed by a Special OIFF Q&A with Jeff Toye (Co-Director), Philip Labes (Star), and Jason Mraz (co star/producer). There might be some musical performances slipped in as well.

This Event is a Special Off-Season Fundraiser for the Oceanside International Film Festival. The 15th Annual Festival Kicks-Off February 17th through 21st, 2026.
