Taiwanese pianist Yun Janice Lu is recognized as one of the most compelling artists of her generation. She believes music is the strongest medium for storytelling, a conviction that leads her to build creative and cohesive performance programs. She offers the audience a vast variety of repertoire, contributing to colorful and engaging listening experiences. Janice is an award-winner of national and international competitions, including the 2024 Concert Artists Guild Competition, the 2018 Geneva International Music Competition (Concours de Genève), and the 2021 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. She is also a recipient of the Chi-Mei Arts Award, an honor recognizing outstanding young talents in Taiwan.
A passionate advocate for the traditional repertoire, Janice is also an explorer of new music. Her recent collaboration with violinist Sophia Szokolay was featured in the NEC Composers’ Series, Collective Voices, premiering a line of works by living composers centered on the theme of “home” at Jordan Hall. She has had the honor of performing with Miriam Fried, Peter Frankl, Anthony Marwood, Jane Coop, Lucy Shelton, Inmo Yang, Bella Hristova, and members of l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. She has given concerts throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, appearing at venues including Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Van Cliburn Concert Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Hahn Hall, the National Concert Hall of Taipei, and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying).

As much as she enjoys being on stage as a soloist, Janice’s passion for chamber music speaks just as strongly. She has been featured at festivals including the Four Seasons, Taos, and Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festivals, Chamber Music Evergreen, Yellow Barn, the Ravinia Music Steans Institute, and Music@Menlo, as well as the Music@Menlo Winter Residency. She is a founding member of Trio Conventi, alongside violinist Yiliang Jiang and cellist Jeffrey Ho, making their debut at Jordan Hall as an NEC Honors Ensemble. Her love of collaboration continues to expand her growing repertoire for piano and strings.
Janice is currently a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) candidate at the New England Conservatory of Music. During her studies, she has been enriched by a wide range of musical knowledge, inspiring her growing commitment to education. She was honored to serve as faculty for the Young Artist Masterclass at Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance in Nova Scotia, where she mentors emerging talents. She has also given workshops, masterclasses, and outreach concerts for broader audiences, and maintains a small studio of young pianists and adult amateur musicians in the Greater Boston area.
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Janice began her piano studies at the age of five. At fourteen, she made her orchestral debut with the Taiwan Youth Orchestra, an appearance that drew attention and led to features in MuzikOnline magazine. She studied for years with Grace Chung, whose guidance deeply shaped her musical foundation at a young age. She later moved to the United States to study with Ning An at California State University at Fullerton, and made her U.S. orchestral debut with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Lio Kuokman, earning praise for “capturing Liszt’s style” and “mastering the fireworks with brilliance” in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. She completed her Master of Music (M.M.) and Master of Musical Arts (M.M.A.) degrees at the Yale School of Music, studying with Wei-Yi Yang, where she was awarded the Elizabeth Parisot Prize for outstanding pianistic achievement and the Evelyn Bonar Storrs Scholarship. Janice currently resides in Boston, studying with Alessio Bax and Alexander Korsantia. In her free time, she loves to hang out with friends, exploring new recipes, and is a dog lover.
