THE MENDICANTS OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY

and Stanford Counterpoint

+

California Golden Overtones

 and The Cal Jazz Choir

will share the evening's stage area, each providing its own array of songs from a variety of styles and genres, all a cappella, going head-to-head to be the audience's favorite for the evening!

The Stanford Mendicants are an all-male a cappella group at Stanford University.  Since its founding in 1963 as Stanford's first such group, the group's size has varied from 6 to 19 members. The Mendicants are a group of singers devoted to performing the best songs of today, yesterday and several decades ago. We pride ourselves on our wide range of styles, from gospel and barbershop to original compositions, jazz standards and contemporary pop. You can see us on stage, serenading in stairwells, or even just breaking out into song around campus.

Founded in 1979, Counterpoint is Stanford's only all soprano-alto a cappella group. They are the second-oldest a cappella group at Stanford and the first historically all-female a cappella group on the West Coast. Focused on building community and celebrating music and performing arts on campus, all of their music is arranged by current or past members. Singing everything from country to jazz to R&B, they showcase a diverse repertoire that they perform across the world.

The California Golden Overtones are the premier all-female a cappella group at the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 1962, the Overtones have recorded multiple albums and EPs, most recently "Out of Line," and placed second at Quarterfinals in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in 2023! The Overtones can be found performing regularly at Cal Football games and University functions, as well as all around the Bay Area at private events and parties. Come see Overtones perform live in front of Sather Gate, every Friday at 1!

We are The Cal Jazz Choir, a student-run vocal jazz ensemble that performs an extensive array of a cappella jazz, including showtunes, fast bebop, ballads, bossa nova, and jazzified Cal songs. We draw our work from great jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jon Hendricks. CJC sings student-arranged pieces, as well as repertoire from well-known vocal groups like The Real Group, the Manhattan Transfer, and New York Voices. CJC prides itself on featuring both outstanding soloists and a cohesive ensemble sound. Our specialities include grooving bass lines, rich multipart harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and improvised scat solos.
