Running ‘Round the World in 7 Days

Throughout history, seven has been viewed as a lucky number. Starting Saturday, January 23, Massachusetts native Becca Pizzi will find out if seven is lucky for her as she sets out on the run of a lifetime—seven marathons, on seven continents, in seven days. Pizzi, a lifelong runner will be one of 15 entrants in the 2016 World Marathon Challenge®. Organized by Global Running Adventures/Polar Running Adventures, the route for this global test of endurance is: Union Glacier (Antarctica); Punta Arenas, Chile (South America); Miami, FL (North America); Madrid, Spain (Europe); Marrakesh, Morocco (Africa); Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Asia); and Sydney (Australia). At the completion of the race, participants will have experienced temperatures ranging from -4 F to 77 F, run over 183 miles, and flown 23,000 miles* (that’s almost 60 hours in the air). Did we mention the entry fee is nearly $40,000 (36,000 euros)? And unfortunately, it doesn’t include flights from your point of origin to Punta Arenas, or your return flight home from Sydney.

Currently, Marianna Zaikova of Finland is the fastest female to finish with a time of 6 Days, 21 hours, and 21 minutes. In order to be the first American female to complete the race, Pizzi told People.com that she’s been relentlessly training by running between 70 and 100 miles, seven days a week. We wish her safe travels and the best of luck on this adventure!
