Starting July 1st, 2024, California Senate Bill 478, otherwise known as the “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute,” makes it illegal for businesses to advertise or list a price for a good or service that does not include all required fees or charges, other than certain government taxes and shipping costs. Other states are likely to enact similar requirements in the future. Failure to comply includes significant fines with the added possibility of direct legal action by consumers against business owners.
What you need to know:
- If you choose to absorb the fee in your ticket prices, there will be no changes in the experience for the buyer. In this case, you don’t need to do anything.
- If you choose to pass on the fees to the buyer you will now be required to show the total ticket price to include fees any time you are listing pricing. Example: Total Ticket Price $86.85 ($79.00 + $7.85 Service Fees)
