A mantra is a point that is generally emphasized by a short phrase. The phrase is straight to the point and hopefully provides some words of inspiration for you in your daily life. Everyone has a mantra, even if you don’t know yours right off the top of your head. You may have a different mantra for life when it comes to work, family, friends, going out, taking care of your pets and so on, but you should definitely have at least one (if not a few) for event planning. The events industry is an exciting and exhausting place, so we created a list of the top eight mantras we live by at Events.com, and hopefully you live by them too.
“Go the extra mile”
Cue the song Eye of the Tiger by Survivor and think the motivational mantra “go the extra mile” during your event planning process. Remind yourself why you got into event planning and how your “go big or go home” attitude is what makes you and your events so great.
“Just keep swimming”
A little annoying but mostly motivating mantra sung by the fish we love from Finding Nemo, Dory. Sing it to yourself a few times and it can easily get stuck in your head, but the positive impact it can have on you is great. Don’t second guess yourself when something doesn’t go as planned, remember to “just keep swimming” and be confident you will find your way.
“I’ll show you”
We love a challenge. If someone tells us it can’t be done, we’re ready to show them it can. Lots can go wrong in the events industry and there are plenty of naysayers who are ready to tell you “no you can’t do that” or “I told you so” when something goes wrong. The next time someone says you can’t do something, show them you can.
“Don’t wish for it, work for it”
We aren’t saying to stop dreaming, but have a more actionable work ethic. Succumbing to the habit of wishing for something instead of working for it can be unmotivating. However, it’s never too late to start working for that thing you wish you had. You’d be surprised how fast you can get something when you stop wishing for it and start working for it.
“The best way to get something done is to begin”
Your time is one of your most valuable assets. Procrastinating can be one of the biggest time wasters, and we’re all guilty for it. If you have trouble starting tasks, try changing your routine. Make a list of things that are more important and timely to the least important and timely. Try tackling the things you dislike doing first, just to get them out of the way. Another form of motivation we use to cure our procrastination is promising ourselves a reward at the end of the tasks we hate.
“Know more, grow more”
Everything is a learning experience. No matter if you had a success or failure, it’s important to remember that you learned something from it. Even more so, always remember that you will and can do better the next time. We’re always learning and always growing.
“Don’t be afraid to be great”
Have you ever heard of the tall poppy syndrome? Tall poppy syndrome is the tendency for society to criticize successful people for what makes them uniquely successful. Ignore the haters, you were meant for event planning greatness. Don’t let someone else give you fear for being great.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”
This mantra, made famous by Wayne Gretzky, and arguably even more famous by Michael Scott, is the dose of reality we need when we wake up in the morning. The fear of being told no or the fear of failing can often be paralyzing, but we can’t let it be. Knowing that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take is a healthy reminder that if you don’t try to get something, you will never have it.
Are you feeling motivated yet? We sure hope so. We want to make sure your mantra is positive. These eight motivational mantras are just the beginning of what you need for a regular go-getter event planning attitude. Repeating any of these eight mantras at any point in your day will have a lasting effect that is a constant reminder of why you’re so successful as an event planner.
